Amb. Bou-Said received a message from UNA/USA Chief on Asylum

UntitledUNOG Affairs

Amb. Dr. Haissam Bou-Said (Ambassador at Large / Advisor to the UNOG Affairs in Geneva) received a message from Mrs. Rachel Bowen Pittman (Executive Director, UNA-USA) mentioning that she came to Amb. Bou-Said last month and asked him for  help to support the rights of asylum seekers. Mrs. Pittman added that unfortunately, she needs to rally together once again to put the voices behind this cause with Amb. Bou-Said mentioning the recent Supreme Court decision that upholds the rule to deny asylum seekers the right to claim refugee status in the United States. She also added that this ruling is devastating for hundreds of thousands of innocent people attempting to escape sweeping violence and persecution. Many are women and children.

Simply put, this decision is in clear violation of international human rights norms Mrs. Pittman demanded, as it goes against her nation’s founding principles and moral values. UNA/USA Chief hoped she can count on Amb. Bou-Said to stand with migrants once again, and urge this administration to uphold America’s obligation to protect human rights for all people, especially those who arrive at our borders in their darkest of times.
