The Coordinator/Special Envoy of the IHRC Ghana, Prof. Michael Kwateng has written a report to inform the IHRC Africa Region HQ on the meeting between the IHRC Ghana and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in Accra, Ghana. The meeting discussed the links between corruption, and anti-corruption efforts and human rights from multidimensional perspectives and enumerated several negative impacts of corruption on human rights.
Prof. Kwateng’s report indicated that the IHRC Ghana and the CHRAJ agreed to work closely and explore possible ways to partner in order to promote human rights and fight corruption in Ghana. This is because both organizations seek to speak for the voiceless. In line with the procedure to get the due authorization for the visit, the Director/Ambassador of the IHRC Africa HQ, H.E Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure earlier approved the holding of the parley between the IHRC Ghana and the CHRAJ also noting that the presence and activities of the IHRC in the country should be formally communicated to the Government’s statutory human rights protection agencies.
Dr. Ahure hinged the necessity of his decision on adhering to international best practices. Stressing a compelling quote of Navi Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Dr. Ahure had stated that “corruption is an enormous obstacle to the realization of all human rights – civil, political, economic, social and cultural, as well as the right to development. Corruption violates the core human rights principles of transparency, accountability, non-discrimination and meaningful participation in every aspect of the life of the community. Conversely, these principles, when upheld and implemented are the most effective means to fight corruption”.
