GHANA POLICE PROMISES TO BE MORE HUMAN RIGHTS CONSCIOUS

Ghana Inspector General of Police (IGP) James Boanuh has assured that officers and men of the Ghana Police command would be more human rights conscious. The IGP spoke on Tuesday 15th June, 2020 in Accra when the International Human Rights Commission IHRC Ghana paid a courtesy visit to on him at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters. Indeed it was a good beginning of a cordial relationship between the two organizations. The Coordinator/Special Envoy of the IHRC Ghana, Prof Michael Kwateng noted the fact the Police were the custodian of law and order, having the statutory role of defending the rights of the people. Prof. Kwateng’s advice concentrated on ensuring that the Police in Ghana does it best to make it’s personnel very professional and observers of human rights. He therefore called for further training of the Police officers and men in the protection and promotion of human rights. Given the roles of the IHRC and the Police, an understanding was reached that the two bodies ensue a partnering that will be mutually beneficial. The IHRC Ghana therefore agreed that it would work with the Ghana Police in several ways including during the upcoming Ghana Presidential and Legislative Elections. In consonance to the processes adopted in the implementation of projects by the African Region HQ, the IHRC Ghana sought the go ahead approval of the Director/Ambassador of African Head of the Human Rights Commission, H.E Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure whose instructions were that necessary symbiotic relations with the Police must be achieved. This is because human rights protection and promotion is not a job for one institution. We are all required to play our parts. Dr. Ahure emphasized intimating the Insprctor General of the Ghana Police about the establishment of the IHRC Human Rights Education College which will serve for trainings in human rights education for the police and other professional outfits. The issue of the training and retraining of the Police in human rights was therefore the cardinal reason for the courtesy visit.
