50 years ago this June, the trailblazers and heroes of Stonewall stood up and fought back against brutality and oppression. And before that, LGBTQ people fought at Cooper Do-Nuts … Compton’s Cafeteria … The Black Cat Tavern … and on the sidewalks of New York, Washington D.C. and across our nation.
Early activists at Stonewall, led by brave transgender women of color such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera and so many others, helped launch a modern movement. Now, we must continue to honor them with action.
This Pride season, it is more important than ever that we recognize the distance we still have to go to achieve full equality, and the power we can harness to achieve that goal, together.
