Press briefing note on Lebanon from Ambassador Dr. Bou-Said

ME Commissioner and Advisor to the UNOG Affairs Ambassador Dr. Haitham Abu Said announced today to the International News Agency for Human Rights that the situation in Lebanon is very delicate where all political parties and the opposition are convulsed in terms of expediting the appropriate solutions.
Amb. Bou-Said added that Lebanon has been experiencing its biggest spontaneous protests in over a decade, which have continued despite the package of reforms announced by the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic. Tens of thousands of peaceful protestors from all walks of life and confessions continue to unleash anger across the country against what they perceive to be decades of corruption and government mismanagement.
ًHe also called on the Government to continue providing protection for peaceful demonstrators while taking appropriate action against possible instigators of violence from both sides.
Ambassador Dr. Bou-Said confirmed that IHRC Lebanon and the Advisory Board will continue to monitor the unfolding events and have reminded all parties of the inalienable rights of people from any political side to assemble and protest freely and peacefully, and of the need to restrict the use of force to the greatest extent possible.

Ambassador Abu Said pointed out that the dialogue between the demonstrators should be launched through a unified committee with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, in order to reach the appropriate formulas according to the constitutional standards in force in Lebanon and this is what he explained on the third day of the demonstration to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michel Bachelet.
