Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, on the margins of the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Yokohama (TICAD).

The Secretary-General expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s cooperation with Africa, especially TICAD, which he said is a very important milestone for Africa to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Prime Minister and the Secretary-General underlined the importance of Japan’s contribution to climate change since the Kyoto Protocol and leading up to the Climate Action Summit in September. The Secretary-General encouraged Japan to establish an ambitious review of its Nationally Determined Contributions in 2020 and to have climate action as a priority in its international cooperation.
